It Was Never Just a Job, Then or Now

(From Teaching to Real Estate, What Hasn’t Changed Is My Approach to People)
Last week, I shared some practical insights about why some homes sell quickly while others sit. This week, I wanted to take a step back and talk about something more personal: how my approach to real estate is shaped by the kind of person I’ve always been.
Before I got into real estate, I worked as a college instructor for many years.
Teaching was something I truly cared about. I enjoyed it, and I took it seriously. I liked the subject and the teaching itself, but what really mattered most was the connection with my students.
I never looked at it like, “I’m here to just teach a lesson and go home.” If a student was struggling, personally or emotionally, I couldn’t ignore that. I’ve always believed that if someone trusts you enough to come to you for help or guidance, then you show up for them. Period.
I remember one student who was extremely shy, the kind who wouldn’t raise her hand or speak in front of the class. I didn’t force her, but I also didn’t let her disappear. I spent time with her after class, got to know her, and slowly helped her build some confidence. By the end of the semester, she volunteered to give a presentation in front of everyone. That was a big deal for her. For me, it wasn’t about “Look what I helped her do.” It was just… what I do. I pay attention. I try to support people.
And honestly, that hasn’t changed now that I’m in real estate.
People think this job is just about contracts and closing deals, but it’s not. When someone hires me to help them buy or sell a home, that’s a big part of their life. I don’t treat it like a simple transaction.
I once had a client who was dealing with a lot of anxiety. We were about to submit an offer on a house he liked, and everything was in place. But something felt off. I could tell he wasn’t ready. He hadn’t said it directly, but I could feel it in our conversations and his energy. So I paused. I didn’t submit the offer right away. I checked in with him. Later, he told me how thankful he was that I didn’t rush it. And I was glad I followed my gut.
Switching from teaching to real estate wasn’t easy. It was a whole new field, a whole new challenge. But the core of what I do hasn’t changed.
In both jobs, I’m working with people. I’m helping them through big moments. I’m listening, I’m reading between the lines, and I’m making sure they feel supported, not just professionally, but personally too.
That’s simply the way I’ve always approached things, whether in a classroom or in someone’s living room.
Yes, I changed careers, but I didn’t change who I am. Whether It’s helping someone pass a class or buy their first home, I care. I show up. And I try to make the process a little easier for them.
That’s what matters to me. And it always will.
